Iron Age bronze cauldron of the hillfort of Leiro-Besomaño, Galicia (Spain)
Riveted bronze cauldron located during the excavation of the Iron Age hillfort of Leiro-Besoñamo, Galicia. Dated to 400 to 60 BCE, it weights 5kg. It was forcefully and hastily smashed and hidden by the walls of the settlement.
The shorelines of Galicia were raided by Julius Cesar in 61-60 BCE (Cassius Dio, *Historia*, XXXVII), who commanded an armada paid by merchants from Gadir (modern day Cadiz). A Roman [dolabra ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolabra)was also found during the excavation, among many other objects. The hillfort was burned and abandoned suddenly sometimes during the government of Octavius Augustus, but it is unknown if as the direct consequence of a Roman assault during the final conquest of Galicia and NW Iberia.
