How were targets marked in medieval (or ancient) archery?

It must be hard to keep track of **your** arrow when firing in a group of hundreds of archers. You won't be able to see where it landed. How did Medieval and/or ancient arrows figure out where their shots were landing and how to correct their aim?

Was there anything like a medieval 'tracer round'?
