2-Pounder Davis Gun (1 1/1. What is that element seen ONLY in the photos of the operational gun? not the front sight, but the cylinder just behind it, and why only on 2pdr in fields

Know about nothing on guns, but Is there any information about what that object at the muzzle end of the 2-pounder Davis gun is—the one appearing in field photographs? In the footage from the testing ground (the images to the left of the circular one (thx wayback machine and some forum)), I don’t see this... muzzle attachment/mutation. The fact that it’s a 2-pounder is confirmed by the man being able to grab it and fire it from his shoulder; on the 6-pounder, 9-pounder, and other versions, the barrel is bare (see last pics with dude and plane). As for what kind of bizarre sight is on the test versions—that’s a separate question.

I’m aware of compensators and flash hider/suppressors, but why is it only on one side and only 2pdr?
