My notes from tonight's library board meeting regarding Cafe con Mel

* The meeting was purely for public comment, not for board response. The board convened for a private meeting immediately after the public meeting in which they were going to discuss the comments received. * News Channel 13 had a camera and a reporter there * The board meetings are published to the library's youtube page * About 15 people spoke, with 5 or so additional public comments read aloud by the library's Public Information Officer * Almost every speaker pleaded for a quick turnaround from the board on an investigation and additional public statement * Despite the town's reputation as being overwhelmingly white, there was a lot of diversity at the meeting. I'd estimate half of the speakers were people of color * The board was also more diverse than I expected: probably a little under half were people of color and multiple members were LGBTQ (two speakers mentioned this as a positive) * Three of the speakers were elected officials, including Councilman Gustavo Santos * Several people spoke out primarily in support of the library staff, saying they could not believe the staff would act in a racist or discriminatory manner * Several people raised their concerns over (in their opinion) poor vetting of the vendor (Cafe con Mel) * Two people raised additional concern over possible nepotism: one stating that the cafe owner was friends with members of the board, and another linking the owner directly to the Vice President (and current Acting President) of the board * Multiple people brought up that the Cafe had an unpaid loan from a Cohoes loan agency (I believe CLDC?) in 2022 and one individual mentioned they had issues with unpaid National Grid bills in the past * Multiple speakers, one notably a former board member, expressed concern over poor management of the Cafe, especially regarding frequent unplanned and uncommunicated closures, and also late openings * Not a single speaker came forward with any incident of racism or discrimination that they witnessed or heard of * Multiple speakers requested details of the vendor's contract with the library, especially when it came to light at the meeting that the rent for the space was only $200/month

I was not one of the speakers.

Below are my thoughts:

Although I went in very concerned that the Cafe con Mel owner was a victim of racism, I came away thoroughly unconvinced that she was a victim of discrimination.

There are some additional comments circulating on r/albany suggesting the main source of conflict between the staff and Cafe con Mel stemmed from the vendor space not being developed as a kitchen, but being rented to a vendor that did need a kitchen. I find these convincing but unsubstantiated, and I'll let you find these on your own, as they are not hard to find and you'll find other perspectives when doing your search.

Obviously everyone is welcome to their own opinion and, if any information does come out (from the board's investigation or elsewhere) that there was indeed one or multiple discriminatory incidents, I will change mine with a heavy heart.
