Planning a walk to play and losing all life early

Newish player, as title says, I’m a bit disappointed because of my skill issue, when I plan to take a big walk around to hunt for a bit, sometimes I die early and have no potions anymore. So now I have to walk without hunting. Is there anything else worth doing while out of hp?
