Thermostat replacement - what is this?

I replaced the thermostat on my 2006 Yukon and now it's leaking a little from the bottom of the housing. This came out with the old thermostat just loose between the thermostat and the engine. What is it? Could it be part of my problem? Thin metal ring; did not seem like it was part of the old thermostat.
