Out of hours vet wouldn't see us!
UK based
8pm last night started seeing bumps appear all over our dogs face.
10pm it had gotten worse to the point that all the bumps had joined up and was just one big massive swelling it was clear she was having some sort of allergic reaction, her eyes at this point had swollen shut so we decided it was time to phone the out of hours vet.
1st phone call they told us its a charge £302.50 before they could even see us we said ok thats fine we're in a fortunate position where thats not an issue for us. So we explained her symptoms, their advice was to give her piriton and run a damp cloth all over her body and if her symptoms didnt get any better we were to call back. So we did as they said.
Just after midnight we phoned back as her symptoms if anything had gotten worse, this time the advice was put her in a coolish shower for 10 minutes in hopes it would reduce swelling. So we did.
Nearly 2am and her symptoms hadn't got any better she was rubbing herself over everything trying to scratch all her itches as well as vomiting. We phoned back and pretty much demanded to see a vet they said as it wasn't affecting her breathing so she should be OK till morning to see our regular vet, they dont like putting that sort of financial burden on someone unless they really have to, I again made it clear that the money was not an issue and I just wanted to see a vet. She went and spoke to someone came back and said they just didn't deem it enough to be an emergency, like wtf!
Dog struggled through the night and it was nightmare for her, we had her at our on vet for doors opening at 8:30am they looked at her face and took her straight through without an appointment. Gave her a strong steroid injection and a course of steroids for the next 5 days, swelling is now getting better thankfully.
Why would the out of hours vet not see us even our vet didn't understand. So yeah sorry for the rant but im just a bit pissed that we and our dog got treated this way.
Update: Thank you everyone for the info, I can understand the reasoning. I know it was pretty selfish to be demanding to see a vet without any knowledge of what there already dealing with.
Just seeing my dog in so much distress skewed my judgement, at that point all that mattered to me was getting her treatment and my mind didn't think much beyond that.
She is so much better now although still a bit swollen, just now have to figure out what happened. Nearly 4 years we've had her and nothing like this has ever happened so its quite the puzzle.
