Can you get base prefix mods from desecration?

I'm new to the game here and I'm looking at poe2db and trying to understand - when you desecrate an item, are the desecrated mods the only ones that are available, or does the pool of options also include base mods? I'm learning how to craft a Quarterstaff, but the desecrated mods all look kinda shitty.
