What options would take away Russias power within the UN?
After invading Ukraine, Russia has been targeted by sanctions of increasing severity the longer the conflict continues. It seems that there is some kind of will to find effective ways to address Russia's action with diplomatic maneuvers as opposed to military ones.
This has made me curious about Russia's role in the UN. Obviously, their permanent seat on the security council makes sure UN peacekeeping forces would not come to the aide of Ukraine. I understand the literal definition of "permanent"- but is there any idea around a UN permanent security council member losing its status? Since that seems unlikely- what other diminishment could occur within the UN to chastise Russia for its actions?
I'm not familiar with the legal structure of the UN in any real detail. I would like to know if there is precedence for this kind of thing, how the mechanics work within the UN, and what would have to change in the UN in order to be able to make drastic changes like this.
I am purely wondering about the capability of this happening. Not convinced it would necessarily be a good thing. Just curious what options are available, how plausible they are, and why.
