Beverly Hills taught me that I’m broke
Anyone else have this realization watching the show?
For context, I grew up thinking my family was pretty well off. My parents had successful corporate jobs. I have several relatives who are doctors or academics. My brother and I went to fancy colleges and he never spent a year in a public school. We lived in a gated community with a country club and a golf course.
We were solidly upper middle class. But compared to the “coastal elite,” we’re broke! I’d never heard the phrase “flying private” before watching this show. I thought that was something rappers and billionaires did. I had a few rich friends in college, but if they got around on private planes they never told me about it.
Our vacations were to Disney World or visiting family. Rich people are always off to Puerto Vallarta, the Caribbean, or Europe.
My mom was considered fashionable in our circles for carrying Louis Vuitton bags and wearing Burberry print scarves. I don’t think she’s ever considered anything from Hermes. I’ve never even been into an Hermes store.
Anyway, this show showed me what luxury actually looks like. Anyone else have this experience watching the show?
ETA the post was getting a little long but I should have mentioned that I really am broke now—in grad school, no trust fund, working side hustles, etc. My parents were able to work for a nice lifestyle, but the gap between how I grew up and how truly rich people live is vast (especially compared where I am now, living on a stipend and student loans).
