Here There Be Monsters
It began with the disappearances. First the logging camp five miles into the jungle - eight men vanished, their tools left scattered by their morning fire. Three days later, the *Morning Star* failed to return to port. When the harbor master sent boats to search, they found only empty waters and an odd silence - no birds, no sign of the usual schools of fish.
Within a week, three more vessels disappeared from the western waters. Sailors spoke of strange disturbances in the depths, of ripples too regular to be waves, too vast to be whales. The fishing grounds grew empty. At night, the web of lights from fishing boats that usually dotted the horizon grew sparse, then vanished entirely.
They found the *Morning Star* on the tenth day. Her hull hung suspended between the cliffs of the western shore, entangled in webs that stretched from rock face to rock face. The strands, thick as ship's rigging, had been woven with terrible precision, creating a net that held fragments of other vessels - ghost ships caught like flies in a spider's larder.
No trace of any crew was ever found.
That night, as Del Pheryx's harbor watch lit their lamps, the ocean began to churn. Something vast broke the surface - not with a splash, but with the steady, deliberate rise of a mountain emerging from the depths. Water cascaded from a segmented body of black and amber chitin. Eight legs, each thick as the oldest trees in the jungle, pulled its bulk from the sea. The spider towered over the harbor, its movement graceful despite its enormous size, each step sending tremors through the docks of Del Pheryx.
It turned toward the city, moonlight gleaming on compound eyes large as houses, and began to move. Now the Ruinways groan with new weight. In the deepest tunnels, where support beams are thick as houses, rhythmic tremors shake loose ancient dust. Miners have abandoned the lower shafts, driven out by vibrations that make their tools dance on the ground. The deeper chambers, previously silent for generations, now echo with the sounds of something massive shifting in the dark.
The dormant volcano's slopes have begun to tremble – not with eruption, but with movement. Ships report disturbances in the depths, where dark shapes pass beneath their keels, larger than any whale. The fog that shrouds the outer islands parts occasionally around silhouettes that scrape the clouds.
The spider was just the first. Something is stirring in Rathara's bones, and the giants are beginning to wake.
No one knows how many titans sleep in Rathara's depths, or what has roused them from their slumber. All that's certain is that the age of giants has begun.
