People talk about double income as if it’s some kind of magic sauce

But in most countries in the world double income is a mundane reality, not a innovative solution. They do it because the pay’s too low, and it takes 2 working spouses to (barely) support a family.

Remember there was a time in America when a working spouse (doesn’t have to be the man) can support a stay-at-home spouse (doesn’t necessarily have to be the wife), 3 children, and a big house? That America was the envy of the world.

Undeniably we are getting poorer in terms of income/housing price. Now it takes two working professionals to afford a starter home (that a blue collar worker could have afforded in the 90s), but please see this “double income” as what it is - a cope, not a magic solution that people before were not smart enough to discover.
