Space Elevator?

So, I recently started on a server and found a guy that has nearly the same weird schedule that I do. We've claimed a planet and have started building a little fleet (I brought my mining drones along, working on combat ships now).

The issue I have is flying my mining mothership into atmosphere and back out is a pain. I recently started thinking about making a space elevator to a station outside of the atmosphere. Has anyone tried this? Is it viable? Does it not cause horrible lag?

My understanding is that you only have one protected "home base", which would leave an orbital installation vulnerable, but if it's connected...
