Buddy suddenly not getting "treat" hearts unless you let it die completely first

Forever I've been waiting an hour, then giving my buddy two treats to refill its energy and get an additional "Give your buddy a treat" heart. Suddenly in the past day or so, this no longer works. I've been having to let the buddy die completely first (or switch it out for another buddy). Same thing has happened to other family members, while another was able to get the heart by feeding 3 berries instead of 2.

This failure is new and quite frustrating. We've tried the usual (closing out the game, restarting; trying a different phone) with no success. Is this happening to anyone else? Any advice?
