Second daughters - tell me your family’s reactions to your birth
I’ll go first!
Lady Doctor (with a smirk to my mom) - so I’ll see you for a third soon?
Maternal grandmother- extremely upset, sulked - refused to come see me as a baby. Mostly ignored me my whole life as I wasn’t fair or “pretty”.
Maternal Grandfather - very cautious. Asked my mother if she was alright that it was a girl. Said that he supported her anyway.
Paternal grandmother- refused to help during my the baby stage but was nice to me when I was growing up.
Mom- elated.
Dad- disappointed but he got over it.
Aunts and uncles- consoled my mother for giving birth to a second daughter.
Dads colleagues- made jokes about how he better be successful and get promoted now that he has two marriages to save for.
All of this BS and I belong to an educated family. My mom only opened up to me recently about the response when I was born because she didn’t want to burden me when I was younger.
Let me hear your stories!
Edit: younger daughters who have older brothers and whose families were happy they were born. I get it. You want to share your experience, however I would hope that you would read all our stories and decide that it’s not the right time to share. Your birth context is totally different, as it comes after the “object” of value (according to our culture) has been born. It’s not a flex that your family is overjoyed for a daughter after having only sons. Thanks.
I am both heartbroken for some of us , at the same time loving hearing the positive two daughter stories!
