[Release] Rakuyomi v1.36.1 is out! Boost your loading speeds and save your eMMC lifespan with the new "Write to RAM" mode

Hey everyone,

The open-source reader **Rakuyomi** just dropped version **v1.36.1**, and new options: **Mode write to RAM for protect eMMC** (implemented in [Issue #213](https://github.com/tachibana-shin/rakuyomi/issues/213)).

If you run Rakuyomi on Kindle or Kobo—especially on budget devices, older e-readers—this update is a massive deal for both performance and hardware longevity.

# The Problem with eMMC Storage

Most devices rely on **eMMC** storage. Unlike modern NVMe SSDs, eMMC is essentially half-duplex, meaning it can only read *or* write at any given moment. This makes it painfully slow when handling multiple small tasks, heavily mimicking old mechanical HDDs.

When you download a chapter, the app continuously writes dozens of tiny image files into the storage. This creates a massive bottleneck (causing those annoying stutters when opening chapters) and rapidly eats up your eMMC's limited write cycles over time.

# The Solution: Write to RAM (tmpfs)

With v1.36.1, the I implemented a solution: routing temporary chapter data directly into a `tmpfs` partition (your RAM) instead of the physical flash storage.

* **Insane Speed:** Because RAM operates at a completely different speed class compared to eMMC, downloading, caching, and opening chapters is now fast. * **Hardware Lifesaver:** By utilizing your RAM as a buffer, you drastically cut down on unnecessary write actions to your eMMC, preserving your device's lifespan.

**Note:** This feature is **DISABLED by default** to keep things safe for ultra-low-end devices with minimal RAM. If your device has some memory headroom, you can easily toggle it on in the Settings menu, allocate a specific RAM limit, and keep an eye on it using the newly added Frontend UI & Resource Diagnostics panel.

# 🎨 What else is new in v1.36.0?

* **Backward navigation through chapters (#212):** Going back to previous chapters while reading is now much more intuitive and seamless. * **Configurable grid visibility (#211):** For those who prefer the library grid layout, you can now toggle titles and metadata on or off for a much cleaner, art-focused aesthetic.

**TL;DR:** Rakuyomi v1.36.1 introduces a clever "Write to RAM" caching mode that bypasses slow eMMC bottlenecks for instant chapter loading while saving your hardware from wearing out. It's off by default, so make sure to check your settings after updating!

NOTE: I'm using PW3 with 500 MB of RAM, so I've set tmpfs to 32 MB, which is enough for most cases. You can also increase it if you want.
