Welp, Linux distro for non-technical windows user?

I really thought i had more time for this, but i just booted up my PC to a screen offering to install windows 11, and another option that sounded like opting out, which I took. A few minutes later its downloading and installing updates, marked as windows 11... Managed to stop it by pausing updates.

Im not a very IT minded person, and eons ago I heard linux struggles with games, so I stuck to windows. So how exactly does one switch to linux?

Im aware there are many different distros, but thats about it.

Looking for something easy to use that can run: chrome(work), discord(friends), firefox, steam(+games)(oh that icon in the header looks promising), starcraft 2, foundryvtt

I know these are probably dumb questions, but i have only briefly touched linux during education like 8-6 years ago(and have bad memory), and just woke up to that win11 jumpscare.

I just need a way to get to a "using windows without microsoft ruining it every 5 minutes"-like experience, without accidentally deleting everything on my PC.

Edit: Wow, thanks for the many replies, a bit too many to reply individually, definitely good some good starting points for research. I luckily managed to stop the win11 nonsense, seemingly without fucking up my pc, so I can take my time with research as i had planned until october(knock on wood, glare at microsoft). Thanks again
