My kid just asked if Santa is real what do I say?

My 8 year old just came up to me with a really serious face and asked me point blank if Santa is real. My heart sank. I thought I had at least another year or two. I panicked a little and just mumbled something about him being real in our hearts. He looked disappointed. What's the best way to handle this without completely crushing his dreams?
