It took me 15 months to quit. Many attempts.
I just saw this post I made on my FaceBook Memories. I posted it on Dec 31, 2011:
- Goodbye, my faithful friend. You have been my constant companion, though good times and bad. You have never been too busy to be with me, and have been there at my call every single day for the last 20 or 30 years. We have spent time together alone, and in company, but it's time to let you go. It saddens me deeply, but I have to face reality, and recognize that we are aren't good together, and need to part ways. My name is Pxx Jxx Mxx, I am an alcoholic, and I am kicking your ass PAST the curb. Dry Until July. Wish me luck.
That was the first time I admitted I was an alcoholic. I tried and tried to kick it on my own, and fell back in the bottle. I'd get a few days, or a few weeks, of dryness, but I'd pick it back up.
But I didn't stop trying. Eventually in Dec 2012 I joined AA, lasted 60 days, and fell back in. It was a professional-level relapse...I refer to it as a Prolapse.
My last attempt to quit was on April 8, 2013, and I've been sober ever since.
So, my fellow Sobernauts, I'm just like most (if not ALL) of you. I didn't succeed on my first, or second, or third attempt to set the glass down. But I kept going...and now I've got a nice stack of sober-days-in-a-row.
Please, my friends, remember this:
- ***Just because you failed in the past doesn't mean you'll fail in the future***
Keep going. Never quit quitting.
May your future be happier than your past. Happy 2024.
