Higher Power as a religion-less person

I'm sure many here are aware of the second step in the 12 steps of AA: we came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. What is everyone's experience finding their higher power? Especially for people who don't ascribe to an established religion, or people who have struggled within the confines of an established religion? What was your experience with "turning your life over" to this higher power, and how did you "come to know it"?
