Advice? Want to quit drinking but live in a city where if you don't go to the bar you don't have a social life.
Sorry if this is the wrong sub! I guess I would say I'm not really addicted to alcohol the way some here might be, but I am addicted to the social parts of drinking. But when I'm drinking with friends I lose control especially at bars. I don't get sick but I black out toward the end of the night like once every 2-3 months. I get drunk at least twice a week. My hangovers are epic. This may just be because of the company I keep but every time I take a break from drinking (I and my partner) we end up with no social life. It seems lousy that most of my friends drink at the bar for their social enjoyment but that's the social norm where I live. And these are not just drinking buddies, they are practically family. I've known the friends I refer to for more than a decade and we've been through thick and thin, drunk and sober. But they pretty much only drink at the bar for gatherings. I love these people, but sometimes it seems expensive and boring. Other times I can't wait to get there and see them. So have I out-grown these friends? The only nice thing I have going, which is majorly nice, is my partner of 11 years is totally on board with me whatever I decide so I'm not totally alone. But we both feel this way. We talk about it. Every time we take a break from drinking, our social life is non-existent. So we need to get creative, I guess? Not many options in this town. Feeling sad about maybe not seeing people much anymore. It's winter here so that doesn't help. TL;DR Friends' social lives revolve around the bar. Mine increasingly doesn't. Love friends tho. What to do?
