Characters investigating past mysteries

I enjoy fictional books where people get caught up in mysteries that took place in the past. Or where they're are trying to research a mysteriously, elusive person. I'm thinking of things with the feel of Citizen Kane. I particularly enjoy if the books include what purports to be historical documentary record, like letters, social media, census or police records etc..

Any recommendations you may have are very welcome.
