Should I read Dune having already watched the movies?
I’m very intrigued by Dune by Frank Herbert because I know it’s a blueprint for lots of other fantasy and sci-fi books like A Song of Ice and Fire. I watched Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, and I’m wondering how similar it is to the book? And is it worth reading if I already know the plot of the films and also I think I have a pretty solid grasp on the message and the themes ( >! Colonialism, white savior trope, the protagonist unwillingly turns into a tyrant !< )? I’m also wondering whether the book plot is more nuanced, whether the side characters who are not Paul are more fleshed out in the book and if there is more scheming/power struggles like in ASOIAF because that’s what I was hoping to see more of in in the films. If that’s the case then I do really want to read the book, but if the movies follow the book extremely closely then I don’t think there’s point in it for me. In that same vein I’m also interested about what book fans think about the movies.
