History of US Government?

As the title says, I'm looking for a nonfiction title about the history of the US government. Something that ideally spans the period from the early governments set up by the earliest settlers, e.g. The House of Burgesses, all the way to Neo-Conservatism. I'd like something that delves into the catalysts for the evolution of government over the years, but not a textbook. Any recs?
