[Update] The second time was easier
So, First off thank you all for your insight and support over the last months, I really appreciate the messages of support I got.
The divorce has been fully processed, I bought a new house and I moved out last week.
I'm still very sad about the whole thing. The actual divorce was quite quick, but then there were months of living together while waiting on banks to sort out mortgages and paperwork. She bought my share of the property. I didn't fight it even though it was my ideal location, I just didn't have the energy. Things were amicable the whole time, we went through our usual routine, watched the same tv shows, ate dinner together, discussed our day - so basically nothing changed from the 6 months prior - except I no longer cared about fixing things. While things were OK, she still made jabs at me about stupid stuff, even in small conversation she would have a go at me, underhanded remarks, kind of petty stuff; it didn't really rile me up or anything, just reaffirmed that I was making the right decision. I contacted my in-laws and let them know I was sorry about how things turned out between us (they don't know the details), and that I really appreciated being part of the family all these years, they were all very supportive and adamant that we would keep in touch despite the divorce. I had the pleasant surprise that our joint friends that I thought would side with her didn't, they pretty much stayed out of it, and have been very supportive of me for the most part, so that's been great! When I went to pick up the last of my stuff and give back the keys she barely acknowledged me, and that was it. Financially she definitely got the better end of the deal, but I'm happy with it, I got what I needed for the most part. I took a few days off work to process everything and so I could move at a reasonable pace, and that was definitely a good idea. I cried a couple of times over the weekend, but I was surprised it wasn't more. I'm feeling lonely now, a little bit at least, but I'm not gonna even consider dating or anything like that for a long while yet. I need to just get settled and work on myself. I've booked some sessions with my therapist over the coming months in the hope that I can get on top of things more easily. It's weird, but right now I'm kind of glad I had such a horrible time trying to figure things out last summer, because I think I actually did a lot of processing of my grief back then, I mean it's still hitting me in waves of sadness, ups and downs, but it's not nearly as bad as I was expecting, so far at least, and nowhere close to what I was going through last summer/autumn.
Our kid seems to be processing things OK so far. I feel sad for my ex too, and I hope she'll be OK and pull through this, seek some help from a therapist or something, for her own sake. I worry she'll just push all this down and blame me for everything, which won't do any of us any good in the long run. So right now I'm cautiously optimistic about the future, lets hope it's onwards and upwards from here, the last few years have been rough (with covid and everything too).
