Failure to install DSM on new device.
I just picked up a DS1821+ and 4 refurbished 12TB WD Ultrastar DC HC520 HDDs to fill it with. Everything connected, turned on, and showed up when I got to the install DSM page.
However, the installation has stalled after about 10% and hits me with a "Failed to format the disk. (35)".
I've been stuck trying various fixes at this step all afternoon. I did my research on the NAS, the drive compatibility, reviews, etc and what I was hoping was plug and play has been anything but....
Any ideas? I've done a ton of searching and best I found was somebody with brand new IronWolf drives having the same issue but no solution was posted. There is an article on the Synology site but it's recommendations are to check compatibility (they are) or to format the drive. If that's the only option I'm waiting on a powered SATA>USB adapter to be delivered, was hoping for better news.
edit: Tried the one drive at a time method, and tried it 4x in bay 1 then 2, 3, and 4. No luck. Could try 5-8 but that seems excessive, so waiting for the adapter to check on PC later today. Also ordered a single new HDD if all else fails just to get past DSM, otherwise I'm blaming the NAS. Will update again...
edit 2: The adapter was useless. While it would power up the drives (found out about power disable on "new" sata drives) and my PC recognizes a USB device has been add or removed, they were no where to be found. Tried disk management, usb devices, This PC etc.
edit 3: New IronWolf HDD installed by itself and was able to successfully boot DSM. Afterwards installed my 4 refurbs and they're recognized and work with good results! Idk wtf was going on, but it all works now finally...and I got an extra drive of storage lol...
