What are your steps to analyze a sound?

I've been lurking on here for a bit and see how good some people are at analyzing a sound for recreation. It got me thinking, what are the steps in analysis people take to get to these recipes? I know a lot of it comes from experience but thought asking this question might help people like me understand the analysis steps people go through in their head to recommend certain wave forms, modulation etc.
