What does a dot before an email address mean in the purview portal?

I have been asked to place some data on hold, the users have been deleted and their mailboxes and onedrive do now show up in the respective portals but when I search using purview I can find them as .username or .username@domain

I can't seem to find an explanation of what that means with regards to purview or holds.
