Dell VRTX, problems adding additional drives

I have a dell VRTX chassis that I need to add a few more drives to without spending a huge amount of money, as it is anticipated it will be replaced soon.

I have obtained some empty drive sleds, and installed some SAS drives I had around, and inserted them, however whilst the drives do power up etc, they do not show up in the CMC. There are no log entries to say they have been rejected, blocked or otherwise, they just dont show.

I have tried using some dell enterprise branded drives salvaged from an old EQL san, as well as some HP branded SAS drives and the behaviour is the same.

With the exception of the Perc8 (which appears to be one release behind, due to the requirement that all servers be powered off to do it) all firmwares are up to date.

Any ideas as to where I should be looking to get some idea of what is going on? I find it odd that there is absolutley nothing logged, even if these are unsupported drives!
