OneDrive and Redirected Documents

Hi all,

I am a member of IT for my local school district. For decades now, we've utilized Microsoft's folder redirection group policy options, pointed at server/NAS shares, to help make our staff and student's work accessible from any computer, anywhere in the district. We also benefit from having a centralized share to target for daily backups.

We are actively working to expand into the cloud capabilities of Office 365, while still maintaining our local infrastructure for file storage. Ideally, what we want to achieve is for our staff's OneDrive account to reside in the same network share as their My Docs and other such data, so that one can encapsulate the other. Essentially, their folder redirection would point to a folder inside their OneDrive folder which itself resides on our NAS. (Netapp Flexpod SAN which is leveraging storage as a NAS for such purposes.)

The problem, as many of you have already guessed, is that OneDrive does not want to be pointed at a network location. It only wants to exist local to the machine it is installed on. We tried to compromise by having OneDrive exist locally, and use its backup feature to copy up anything saved to a user's Documents folder, but it won't work if the two folders exist on different volumes.

If anyone has a suggestion for how to achieve this, I'm open to any ideas you'd be willing to share.

Thank you for your time.
