Not gonna JAZ it up

I've worked in computer support in a large organisation since the 90s, and well, it's kind of common knowledge among my co-workers and many of our users that I collect old computers and accessories... So, last year, I got a call from one of said users, and he asked me if I happened to have a JAZ drive, which I admitted to. (I also have ZIP drives, Bernoulli drives - but no platters for the Bernoullis, and even a pair of Clik! drives) Then he asked if it was possible to borrow it... Cue my curiosity. I wondered if he had come across a couple of old discs he needed to check for contents, but no... There was this big information board somewhere that only read/wrote to those. So I asked if they were decommissioning it and needed to get a dump from it or something like that.(I was looking at a chance to get the main controller... ) Nope, they needed to transfer an update TO the system, and their only working JAZ drive had died. So, what did I do? I not all that politely told them to forget it and find one on eBay or something, then hung up. Of course, they did complain to my boss. But I told him that the drive in my collection was bought on eBay with my personal funds, not adopted from the obsolete piles at the office, and that while I wouldn't mind lending it out to recover data from a decommissioned system, I would not risk it to keep a system alive that should have been replaced or upgraded years ago. ( I doubt it would have been returned before it broke, if ever. )
