How does the child tax credit work

I will be having my first child towards the end of the summer and it got me thinking about how the child tax credit works. With it being called a credit it appears to me that you get an additional $2000 on your refund as long as you don’t owe money, but upon googling it seems that it’s more like a tax deduction. Can someone tell me how this really works?
