17K mortgage interest and 25k tip deduction affects social security tax?
I paid 5800 in federal tax and 3900 in social security tax. I made 62k last year. I have 17k in mortgage interest and 25k in tip deduction(bartender) So I think my taxable income is 20K?
My tax person said I'll be receiving 4582 from federal and 503 from state(NJ).
I was expecting a larger refund Bec of the 42k in deductions. Is social security tax eligible to be refunded based on my taxable income being 20k instead of 62k or just the federal tax?
Does the refund seem correct?
