instructional Aide vs Certificated Sub
Hey all, I'm looking to go back to school to get my credential. In the meantime I've been applying for a few Education jobs, and have now been offered two of them. I'm having a tough time deciding which would be more beneficial for the long-term.
Job #1: Certificated Sub. Pros: I'd get to experience different classrooms and age groups to help me decide what I'd ultimately like to do (I haven't decided between Multi-Subject Elementary or Single-Subject Secondary English or Art.) I'd likely get more hours. Cons: The school district is 30+ miles away. Lack of regular work. Not being able to really make an impression. Being treated like a sub.
Job #2: Instructional Aide at a local high school for the Arts. Pros: I am passionate about what the school is about. It's <10 miles from my house. Stability. The possibility of getting a full-time teaching position there once I'm credentialed. Cons: It's part-time, 20 hours per week. It's not a certificated position so maybe it's not as good on a resume?
Which do you think would better help to advance my career? I'm in California, if that makes a difference in anyone's opinion. Also money isn't necessarily an issue. Though Job #2 is only part-time, I could likely work part-time at my current, non-education-related office job, or my husband and I could tighten our belts for a bit and power through.
I'm leaning toward the Aide position, but can you think of any other reasons the sub one might be better?
