New CPU Overheating at Stock Speeds?

Hello r/techsupport

A few days ago, I decided to upgrade my antiquated gaming system and picked up a new CPU + motherboard.

I usually stress-test my machine after an upgrade, and temperatures in Prime95 hit 68C fairly fast. I'm still not entirely sure what the maximum temperature for my new processor is, so I stopped the test.

Initially, I chalked it down to P95 being unrealistically taxing on my CPU, but when running certain games or software that's particularly CPU-intensive, the core temperatures spike rapidly towards 70C. Core runs idle around 17-20C.

I'm using a fairly hefty second-hand cooler (Can't remember the brand or model #), and my case has plenty of airflow. I reapplied thermal paste after the initial issue, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

System Specifications are as follows:

-AMD FX-6200 Six-Core Processor

-Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 Mainboard

-2x 4GB DDR3 RAM

-nVidia GTX460SE (Which doesn't get that hot)

-Corsair 750W PSU (Can't recall the model number and will update next time I restart and open the case)

I was previously running an Athlon II X4 645 on a Biostar Motherboard, and the thing rarely went past 40C at full load.

Has anyone got any insight to what might be causing these high temperatures?

EDIT: A quick Google search tells me the maximum 'safe' temperature for the FX-6200 is 70C, but I've not found anything official. Is this correct?

ANOTHER EDIT: Disabled CPU Smart Fan Control in the BIOS and got a 2-3 degree drop. Still not really enough though.
