Xbox One controller (2.4GHz) disconnects instantly on consecutive power ons using official wireless adapter (Win 11)

As topic states. Controller works fine *once* after a fresh reboot, but on consecutive power ons (i.e. turning off and on again) it connects but dies after a second or two. Sometimes the light will stay alive but the controller dies when a joystick is moved or button pressed. Even opening the start menu will kill it. Neither re-pairing or physically reconnecting the wireless adapter helps.

I've found one way to trigger this "reset" without a reboot, which is the following procedure:

* Manually reinstall the controller as a generic HID gaming device in device manager. (This keeps the controller alive and working, but naturally without xinput support.) * Go to the XBOX Accessory App and do a controller firmware update. It will say no update available but will still reset the controller. * Reinstall the controller as a XBOX One Controller (xinputhid.sys).

After this the controller works fine again until powered off.

I'm pretty sure this issue started after a Windows 10 update. Either that or installation of Steam's "Xbox Extended Feature Support" driver, which has since been uninstalled. Rolling back to an earlier system backup solved the issue, but I want to be able to run a current OS build. I've now upgraded to Windows 11 but the issue remains.

I'm using the latest drivers available for the XBOX Wireless adapter (1.0.46.1) and have tried older ones as well without success. I've also tried:

* Manually downgrading to an older xinputhid.sys version. * Turned off any power saving features. * Different USB-ports including USB 2.0.

As the controller works fine on a fresh reboot, after the "reset" procedure above or as a generic HID gaming device I feel like this is a driver issue. Most likely related to xinputhid.sys but I'm at a loss as how to troubleshoot this further. Another possibility I see is that the Steam "Xbox Extended Feature Support" driver made some registry changes that remains even after it's uninstalled which is causing some sort of conflicts, but I don't know how to find and purge those changes in that case. Running *pnputil /enum-drivers* returns no results for any installed Steam drivers.
