Can I "subtract" an older version of an image texture from a newer one so I only get the edits i made?

This is an odd question but I was doing some texturing work for a fangame and it crashed. I wanted the "bloody" variant to remain as a layer all by itself, but since it crashed it autosaved as one image. I had a recovery of my original base texture thankfully, but the bloody texture with transparent background is gone.

Can I use the image data of the "base" texture sort of like a transparency mask to get an approximation of my bloody texture? Image examples can be provided if helpful
