Can't get updates to work on Windows 7?

I upgraded my XP netbook to Win 7. I could update IE to 11 but nothing else will update at all. I go to the Microsoft website and try to manually update individual items with no results. I use the Windows update in the start menu with the same results. I'm just trying to get everything up to date to the current limit of Windows 7.
