How Do I Find A New Therapist?
I am not really clicking with my current therapist. She talks about herself a lot and never really asks me questions, it just feels like a 45 minute chit chat. I'll bring up stuff that is bothering me and she always focuses on the wrong thing even after I say that's not what's bothering me. I am a people pleaser and I need somebody who will try to push past my smile and ask me deeper questions. She also just doesn't seem to get that I am struggling, even when I say I am. I try to advocate for myself but she keeps pushing the appointments further and further apart to the point where I haven't been in almost 2 months. She says I can call whenever she is in office, but that's not really the kind of person I am.
My employer made me go to the hospital back in December as I was struggling with suicidal ideation (not for the first time, but the first time I ever sought help. I have been struggling for at least 15 years). From there I was referred to crisis counseling and met with 4 different counselors, one of which I finally felt was getting deeper down and was able to meet with a few times. Then I was accepted into a partial hospitalization program based on this counselor's suggestion and had to give up the crisis counseling to attend the program. The program was immensely helpful and I miss it, but it wasn't a long term solution and I "graduated" the program in February. The crisis center then set me up with my current therapist.
So basically I never had to look for a therapist, it was all just kind of laid out for me. How do I find a therapist that I can actually connect with?
