Help me understand what Viññāṇa is

Thank you everyone for answering my previous question on [Avijjā paccayā saṅkhārā](https://www.reddit.com/r/theravada/comments/1wns4b4/how_to_seerealize_avijj%C4%81_paccay%C4%81_sa%E1%B9%85kh%C4%81r%C4%81_within/). Your answers helped me broaden my knowledge.

My new question is on Viññāṇa.

My current understanding is that it is the experience itself. Experience of any stimulus (images, sounds, smells, touch, thoughts). I understand that you can only experience nama and rupa, so they are interdependent. However, I don't understand how Viññāṇa arise from saṅkhārā.

Please correct me if my understanding itself is flawed.
