Canada's biggest union just declared a wildcat (illegal) strike after the government ordered striking workers back to work less than a day after the (legal) strike began!

Air Canada flight attendants are forced to do unpaid labour; they've finally gone on strike, and the federal government immediately ordered them back to work. The union (CUPE) rejected the back-to-work order and are continuing to strike anyway!

A similar thing happened in Ontario in 2022 when CUPE rejected the Ontario government forcing workers in the education sector back to work. The government was forced to back down when other unions threatened solidarity strikes and an eventual general strike.

From what I've seen (anecdotally), the flight attendants have widespread support even among Conservative Party voters (probably because it was the Liberal government forcing workers back to work, but y'know) so hopefully the union is able to keep pushing without the government being able to crack down on them.

Edit to correct myself - it's not technically wildcat since the union leadership supports it, but it is illegal.
