AJ’s suicide attempt

I almost broke down when Tony saved his boy, dragged him outta the water, yelled at him, and AJ is just laying there by the pool hysterical crying. I think that’s the only time Tony ever hugged or had any physical affection with AJ. Am I wrong? I do find Tony and Carm to be very cold towards their kids, maybe it’s because the kids are a little older when the show starts (maybe Meadow is HS and AJ is finishing JHS?)
