How are y'all getting so far?

I've been playing for years and have never gotten past 384. How are people getting into the thousands?

Perhaps related, is there someplace that describes the rules for where a tile will spawn? Obviously if there is only 1 space left it is easy to figure out but beyond that I am always unsure where tiles will pop up at.
