[TOMT][Book] Childrens 'I Spy' Type Book With Robot

I remember a children's book, at least fifteen years old, that was a lot like the old 'I Spy' books, but the scenes all followed a small robot. Each scene was a retro style diorama made of everyday items, and he was on a journey to, I think, build a larger robot in the end. Scenes included his design phase with blueprints, a scrap shop for parts, building the robot, and then walking with it. Odd detail, I remember the city in the background having buildings made of cheese-graters and other large, shiny items. Thanks in advance.
