PC Multiplayer population?

There's a killer Walmart deal that really makes me consider buying this but I just want to know, is the online population as bad as everyone says? Are there really only 1000 players on peak hours? I live in the US, east coast if that matters. Even with the low players, is it worth it? If it will last then I'd have no regrets.
