I'm a longtime TW player and am still struggling with Warhammer
As the title says, I've been playing since Medieval 1, with M2TW and RTW being my favourites in the series, and I've played pretty much all the title up to and including Warhammer 2, excluding Attila.
I don't know what it is, but the battles in Warhammer are weirdly tough. I used to always be able to pull these crazy victories out of my ass against insurmountable odds by using unusual tactics or being really good at kiting the enemy. But the warhammer battles are so fast-paced and the enemy never seems to route (side rant: I absolutely hate that CA introduced flashing white banners to represent a unit wavering instead of routing, it fucks with my reflexes every time). I know the big-brain, pro-gamer strat is to do cycle charges while pinning the enemy with trash, but the maps are just so small and the enemy moves so fast that I can never seem to put my cav to good use.
There's also the challenge of knowing the game's units, which are entirely alien to me. This is a matter of having experience, so I'm not too upset about this, but it's really hard for me to remember all the fantasy names and units on top of all the unique effects. (Second side rant: I hate that CA introduced the encyclopedia in S2TW instead of just being able to right-click unit cards to see their stats; it's made attacking units that you're seeing for the first few times a real pain in the ass, and compounds the issue of not knowing what I'm looking at).
The campaign has never been the hard part for me and is the area i usually excel in, but it seems like the autoresolve seems to favour the AI even more than it did in the past, which is kind of a pain because of my newfound frustration with the battles. I do wish the campaign had more wealth buildings because this game, like R2TW, seems to incentivize expensive doomstacks, which are hard to maintain; I feel like I can only have one big army and deciding to recruit a second feels like a huge risk and makes defending my territory from other fronts like an impossible task, as the garrisons are always super pitiful compared to the attacking enemy doomstacks. (Third side rant: I dislike the general-only mechanic that R2TW introduced for armies, making it impossible to customize your garrisons).
Overall, I still like Warhammer and I want to like it even more, but it's been a really frustrating experience for me. The campaign is an improvement from ~~settlement management simulator~~ Rome 2, but I'm mostly struggling with the battles and unit comps because a fantasy setting makes it a bit less intuitive and I struggle with the speed. Also, I think the AI gets a metric asstonne of extra moral/leadership (Rome1 was guilty of this, but only at the harder difficulties), because they always stomp me in 1v1 fights even when I have superior troops.
