Question about train spotters

Hi all,

Please excuse what is probably a pretty base question but I’ve often wondered was people look for when they are watching trains. I’ve often seen intense looking civilian folks pulled over, watching them in my town, but never quite understood the hobby. Can anyone explain this to me? Thanks in advance!
