The Miracle of Stonewall
To this day historians, activists, religious scholars, and paranormal enthusiasts marvel at the Miracle of Stonewall. Despite decades of study, scientists have found no explanation for the mysterious events that happened in Greenwich Village in late June, 1969.
In the late 1960s, the Stonewall Inn was a popular haunt of cis gay men and absolutely no one else. Police raids on gay bars were common at the time, and the Stonewall's ties to the Mafia made it an especially tempting target for the police. On the morning of June 28th, 1969, at approximately 1:20AM, four plainclothes officers entered the Stonewall and announced their presence. Frightened patrons attempted to escape, but the police had barred the doors. Typically, during such a raid, officers would line up patrons in an orderly fashion and do absolutely nothing to verify their sex, since only cis men visited gay bars.
That night, however, a large crowd gathered outside the Stonewall Inn to watch the raid. Tensions rose, and violence broke out when a traditionally feminine woman--possibly Barbie LaFemme, the girliest girly girly in all of New York City--resisted arrest and was hit on the head with a baton. As the woman begged for help while being lifted into the back of a police wagon, the crowd grew restless.
What happened next defies explanation. While skeptics question the veracity of the legend of that night, many eyewitnesses have come forward to insist that the stories are all true. According to the oft-repeated account, a brick suddenly materialized in midair, hovered for a moment, then hurled itself at the police. Another brick levitated off the ground entirely by itself and flew toward the officers. The crowd was startled, since there was no one present who could have possibly picked up the bricks. The cis men and women who were present looked at each other in disbelief, shrugged, and decided that they too should probably do something.
And so the Stonewall Riots began, started by absolutely no one at all.
