Beast Machines question

So I was reminded that this is the 25th anniversary of its finale and it got me thinking, would have been a bigger hit if it were not a direct sequel to Beast Wars? Will spoil anything just in case no one hears seeing either of them, but I’m just wondering if it had either like a complete Newcastle characters or if it took place with the same characters but years down the road, would it be much better received?
