Denied Face Recognition Opt Out and Complaint Details
I was denied facial recognition opt out at PHL airport today.
Below is the complaint I submitted to the TSA:
"At the TSA agent's podium I was asked for my ID. Then when asked to do the facial recognition I requested to opt out. The agent told me I could not opt out of the facial recognition because she had already run my ID. The agent called her manager over and repeated the same thing. Ultimately, I was given no other alternative and had to perform the scan to proceed to screening."
Below is the response from TSA:
"CAT-2 Opt-out Complaint At checkpoint locations where TSA is testing Credential Authentication Technology with a camera (CAT-2), TSA will capture passengers’ facial images to assist in authenticating identity. These images are not stored and participation is voluntary. Passengers may choose to opt-out of the CAT-2 taking their photo. Those passengers are directed to the Travel Document Checker (TDC) for manual identity and travel document verification.
We regret that you had a negative experience at our screening checkpoint. If you experience difficulties opting out of the CAT-2 during future travel, please ask to speak with a supervisor at the checkpoint.
Since your complaint concerns a specific airport, we have forwarded a copy of your letter to the appropriate Customer Support Manager for their awareness.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us."
